1994 Ms. Universe Sushmita Sen was asked her final question in the prestigious pageant: What is the essence of a woman? She gave an abrupt answer that gave her the crown: To be a mother.
I would have answered the same thing should I be asked that question, but there is a question that follows that: What is the essence of a mother?
Being a mother is one of the most difficult task there is in the world. It is a life-long conviction, a life-long process. It is like looking at an abstract painting. No one can fully give an exact interpretation except the maker himself. In fact it is so abstract that you have to learn it by yourself as you go through your life. No two mothers will have the same situation so similar that their actions will result to the exact the same outcomes. No shoe will ever fit at anyones foot except the owner.
Doctors, Engineers, Pilots, even Chefs have their schools to give them the knowledge that they need in order to be effective and flawless. But motherhood? There is none. It is the riskiest trial and error aspect of life. No offense meant to all fathers in the world, but I believe that motherhood is far riskier than fatherhood. The family depends so much to the "mother" of the house that one wrong move of a mother would create a chain reaction. She needs to be extra careful about all the things that she does and will do. She must use all the logical reasoning at the same time her heart to weigh things concerning her family.
Mothers are the most "masochist" person in the world. Don't get me wrong but they really would give everything to the point that doing the things for her kids would hurt them. When their child is inside their womb, mothers would eat anything or refrain from doing what they like most just for the sake of the baby, some would even risk their lives just for their baby to survive even if it means taking their own. As their kids grow, they would do the impossible just to make the baby happy and healthy. Mothers would stay up all night when their kids are sick, they would pass on buying their sought after shoes or perfume or bags, just to give their kids what they want. As their child becomes a teenager, mothers would hide their tears when their kids shout at them :mom, ur embarrassing me in front of my friends! or mom, I'm big enough to do it on my own, or mom I won't go with you because I'm going out with my friends. They would pretend that everything is all right. As their kids continue to grow, mothers would not stop working just to give their kids the education that would help them survive in the world. When their kids marry, mothers would even take care of their grandchildren no matter how painful their arthritis are or no matter how brittle their bones have become, mothers would still play horsie for their grandchildren just to give their kids a time to rest from their work.
Mothers are created for a purpose: To be a source! To be a source of knowledge during their child's formation years, to be a source of strength when her family is weak, to be a source of joy not just for her family but for the people around her, to be a source of inspiration during her child's desperate times, to be a source of companion when ever her family feels abandoned, to be source of love whenever there is hatred inside the house, to be a source of peace among her children, to be a source of guide so the kids won't get lost, to be a source of truth when all the world is deceiving, to be a source of hope when everyone wants to give up, to be a source of justice and show equality among her children, to be a source of life when no one seems to feel like living and to be a source of faith to prove her kids that GOD answers their prayers.
Mothers are the living proof that TRUE love exist. Apart from God, no one will ever equal the love that a mother can give. No human can give up everything but a mother, because a mother can give up even her own happiness or her own life for her children.
As we celebrate Mother's Day, let us glorify God in giving us our mothers. Let us show our gratitude to the most significant woman in our lives by telling her that we love her and that we are thankful for all the things they did, they do and will do for us.
To all the mothers around the world... Happy Mother's Day!
